

Raleigh – Mary Carolyn Hines, age 96, died peacefully on February 27, 2012 in Raleigh where she had made her home since 2001.
A native of Greensboro, she was born on July 15, 1915 to Irsey and Lillian Glass Hines. A 1936 graduate of UNC-Greensboro (Women’s College) Carolyn did graduate work at George Washington University. She was a member of Greensboro’s First Presbyterian Church since 1936.
A graveside service will be Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 am at Alamance Presbyterian Church. The family will visit with friends prior to the service at the church.
Carolyn held a membership in NCES, NC Library Association, Greensboro Historical Museum, plus charter member of the Greensboro Friends of the Public Library and friends of the Carolina Theater.
Since her brothers were in the services, Carolyn interrupted her teaching career to serve her country in WWII. She joined the staff of Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD) where she served four years.
Carolyn’s love of teaching followed a family tradition. She was a faculty member of Grimsley High School, staff at Greensboro Public Library and media specialist for the Guilford County Schools. Her teaching career spanned thirty-three years.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, James and Robert Hines. Carolyn is survived by her brother Martin and wife Ruth of Raleigh; nieces, Dr. Elizabeth Hines and husband Michael Wolfe of Wilmington, Barbara McBride and husband Andrew of Eden, Carol Allen and husband Don of Raleigh, Diane Hines of Cheraw, SC; nephews James Hines, Jr. and wife Lisa of Roanoke, VA, Stewart Hines and wife Christina of Myrtle Beach, SC: sisters-in law, Carolyn Watson Hines of Greensboro, and eight great nieces, one great nephew and one great great nephew.
Carolyn had a deep love for her family and loyalty to her friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr. I. Ahmed for eleven years of tender care and many thanks to the wonderful and competent staff of Magnolia Glen.
In lieu of flowers it is Carolyn’s wish that memorials be made to the Library of the First Presbyterian church, 617 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401, or to The Salvation Army, 307 West Lee Street, Greensboro, NC 27406.
