
Mrs. Hughes was born on July 7, 1921 in Norwood, NC to Mittie Vashti & James Thomas Franklin Cross. She attended High Point High School and was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Student Council. Mrs. Hughes is an Honors Graduate of Montreat College, where she was also a Member of the Honorary Board of Visitors. She married Lloyd Odell Hughes on May 21, 1940, and the two enjoyed 62 years together. Mrs. Hughes was an excellent designer, and she retired from the Design Department of Hughes-Rankin Company.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in High Point, NC, where she was a teacher in the youth division and a member of the adult fellowship class. She was also active in her community and enjoyed supporting numerous causes. She was a member of the High Point Professional Business Women’s Club, the past President of the Town & Country Garden Club, a Charter Member of the High Point Literary League, a member of a Mid-Week Study Club, and a member of High Point Country Club.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Peggi Hughes of Lakeland, FL; her son and daughter-in-law John and Susan Hughes of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren, Matt Hughes, Carly Hughes, Geoffrey Hughes and Jonathan Hughes; and a great grandson Aiden Hughes. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd.
There will be a private family burial for Mrs. Hughes at a later date.
