Mary Louise “Weezie” Hill Gunter passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on February 28, 2026, at the age of 88. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on November 9, 1937, to Louise Hastings Hill and Theodore David Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore David Hill, Jr., and son-in-law, Peter Kenneth Moffitt.
A native of Winston-Salem, Weezie graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School. She then went on to St. Mary’s Junior College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Salem College. She met the love of her life, Layton Herbert Gunter, Jr., on a blind date to a Louis Armstrong concert, and they were married on May 30, 1959. The first time Layton ever saw her, he knew that she was the girl he was going to marry, and they were married for almost 67 years. After residing in Raleigh and Burlington, they eventually settled in Winston-Salem where they raised their two daughters, Louise and Susan. She loved being a wife and a mother and took great joy in being involved in her daughters’ activities.
Weezie volunteered in many organizations through the years including the Junior League of Winston-Salem, the Parents Association at Forsyth Country Day School, and Young Life. She enjoyed being an active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church and truly was a woman of faith. She enjoyed her Bible Study, her Circle Group, and doing her part in making the palm crosses for the Palm Sunday Services.
Nothing gave her more joy than being surrounded by her entire family. She enjoyed the annual “Cambridge Road Family” trips to Garden City Beach, SC, where she could “hold court” and enjoy her chardonnay. She was blessed with relationships from every stage of her life and loved sending birthday cards to family and friends. She was famous for “Gana’s” chicken, her chocolate pie, and her “Goop Cake”. We will greatly miss her wisdom, her willingness to listen, and her unwavering love and support. She was blind but now she sees!
She is survived by her adoring husband, Layton Herbert Gunter, Jr., daughters, Louise Gunter Williams (Michael Donavant) of Centennial, CO, and Susan Gunter Moffitt (Joseph Carroll) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren: Peter Layton Williams (Zoe), of Denver, CO; Patricia Louise Palmer (John), Emily Hastings Moffitt and Mary Layton Moffitt Bullock (Thomas) of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren: Henry Peter Palmer, Eva Layton Williams, Liza Louise Palmer, and Leonard “Leo” Robert Williams. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Roberta Helms Hill, of Winston-Salem, NC, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom she deeply cherished.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, NC with a reception to follow in the Colhoun Room.
