Mary L. (Crissman) Taylor, 84, of Greensboro, North Carolina passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 29, 2015. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by all. A visitation will be help on Thursday, July 2nd at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm Street from 4 until 6 pm. The formal burial service will be held this summer at Arlington National Cemetery.
Mary was born July 16, 1930 in Lincoln, Nebraska, daughter of the late Charles Vaughn Crissman and Elizabeth Gallion Crissman. She grew up in the lovely town of Chanute, Kansas as in the famous Kansas song: “Chanute where the girls are cute!” Mary came from a family of educators and upon high school graduation was appointed by the Leanna School Board to teach 1st – 8th grade in a one room school house. In addition to teaching full time, she attended Chanute Community College. Later she transferred to San Diego State to complete her degree in teaching. She continued teaching in California, Kansas, and Colorado. She finished her formal career in Augusta, GA after the birth of her first child. Her three children were the beneficiaries of her life long appreciation of education.
Mary was predeceased by the love of her life, Colonel James R. Taylor. They were joyfully married for 52 years and she traveled the world by his side as the dutiful Army wife and loving mother. She had a gift for making the residence (regardless how temporary the stay) a warm and loving home. She made every new city an adventure for the family – diving into the history, culture and local sites.
The lessons taught by her have and will continue through the legacy of her three children and only grandchild: Jacqueline Taylor Wieland (Bruce) of Greensboro, Nora Elizabeth Taylor (Leon) of Fredericksburg, VA and James Charles Taylor (Claire) of Denver, CO and grandson – Bradley James Taylor (Gainesville, VA).
Mary was known for her hospitality and “Tuesday Night” social hours with her fabulous neighbors. She thoroughly enjoyed her Friday nights with her friends at Salvino’s! Special thanks to all of her caregivers in recent years who provided wonderful and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the Women’s Resource Center of Greensboro at 628 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or http://www.womenscentergso.org/donate.html.
