She was born April 3, 1921 in Norfolk, VA, to Daisy Walton Callis Beckett and James Augustine Beckett. She was for many years a resident of Chesapeake VA.
Mildred was a wife, a mother and a homemaker. She loved family, music and laughter. She gave of herself unstintingly to the community, serving as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts of America for more than 30 years, with the 4H, the Home Extension service, and her church. She was a 64 yr member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a careful seamstress and loved to stitch glorious wardrobes for her daughter’s dolls. She loved the ocean and was never happier than when she could walk the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. She was a great dancer, and for many years the Norton’s were faithful participants in Khedive Shrines’ Saturday dances. In more recent times, she and Herb shared adventures as “full-timers” in a motor coach, travelling US highways and byways more than 20 years.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Joseph Herbert Norton Jr.; mother of the Rev. Virginia Norton Herring of Greensboro, Joseph Herbert Norton III (deceased), and David Lynn Norton of Chesapeake, VA. She had 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
