A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at Well Spring Retirement Community, 4100 Well-Spring Drive, Greensboro, NC, 27410 on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2:30pm. Her grandson, Rev. Tripp Kimbrough, will officiate.
Nancy was born May 9, 1922 in Salisbury, NC, the beloved daughter of Clarence and Phebe Summers.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, James Arey Summers. Her husband of 50 years, Houston M. Kimbrough, originally of Spokane, Washington, died in 1995.
Nancy was the consummate Southern lady: gracious, lovely, and of indomitable strength and character. She was educated at Randolph Macon Women’s College, Lynchburg, VA and Columbia University, New York, NY. After her marriage to Mr. Kimbrough in New York City in 1945, she settled with him in Gary, Indiana; Houston, Texas; and finally San Francisco, CA where he was employed by Standard Oil/Chevron. They lived for 40 years in Orinda, CA, where Nancy taught elementary school and they raised their two children. Upon retirement, Houston and Nancy moved to Lake Wildwood in the foothills of California where they lived for 15 years. There Nancy was a tireless hospital volunteer. In 2005 Nancy moved to Well Spring in Greensboro, NC to be close to her son and his family. In Greensboro she made many dear friends and renewed relationships with friends from her youth in Salisbury. She also reunited with her close friend, Eleanor Zuhling Dillard.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lynn Kimbrough Bain and husband Greg Hugh of Las Vegas, NV, and her son, Houston M. Kimbrough, Jr. and wife Von of Summerfield, NC. She will also be remembered with great love by her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tyler Bain and
wife Janelle of Las Vegas, NV; Ashley Kimbrough Mink and husband Jay of Charlotte, NC, and their children, Juliana, Phoebe and Thomas; Rev. Tripp Kimbrough and wife Anna of Greensboro, and their children, Ella and Houston IV; Summers Kimbrough McMurray and husband Torrey of Knoxville, TN and their children, Shepard, Landry and Graeme.
The family of Mrs. Kimbrough would like to thank her doctors, Dr. James Granfortuna, Dr. Brad Sherrill, and Dr. John Griffin. The family is also grateful for the excellent care given her by the staff of the Well Spring Rehabilitation Unit.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
