Naomi Iskowitz Kaplan died on June 27 at Friends Home West. Born on June 11, 1931 to Morris and Ann Iskowitz, Naomi grew up in New York City. She moved to Greensboro in 1956 after marriage to Stuart Kaplan. They were active members of Beth David Synagogue for over 50 years and where Naomi founded the Knitter’s Group, making knitted and crocheted items for hospice, hospitals, children and the homeless. Upon news of her illness, the knitters named their group: Naomi’s Knitters of Beth David Synagogue.
A spirited and kind woman, Naomi had a great sense of humor and welcomed all into her circle. She volunteered at Shepherd Center, Hospice, Jewish Family Services and her synagogue. She also believed that one should stand for what is right and good and treat people with respect. She lived her life acting on those beliefs.
She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother, Edward Ingram. She is survived by her husband of almost 63 years, Stuart Kaplan, of Friends Home West; her children Alan (Kate) Kaplan of Charlotte, Shari (John) Heberton of Greenville SC and Richard (Cathy) Kaplan of Raleigh; and grandchildren Joshua and Kayla Kaplan, Michael and Amy Heberton and Andrew and Eva Kaplan. She also will be missed by a wide circle of friends.
Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 28 at 2:00 pm at Beth David Synagogue, with burial to follow at the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Naomi’s memory to Beth David Synagogue, Jewish Family Services or Hospice of Greensboro.
