Neil McPhail Fraser was born in Eltham, London on December 21, 1930 to Henry William Fraser and Isabel Helen Fraser. He spent the war years in Fochabers, Scotland. Neil Joined the British Merchant Navy at 16 and traveled extensively around the world. He earned a Masters Certificate and later specialized in laying submarine cables. He was part of the team that laid the 2nd transatlantic cable when he was shipwrecked. Neil lectured at a nautical college in London for 6 years before immigrating with his family to the United States in 1966. He began a 30 year career as a Submarine Cable Engineer/Navigator. After spending much time in North Carolina, Neil retired with his wife Muriel to Hilton Head Island and then to Venice, Florida, and returned to Greensboro last year.
Neil enjoyed playing tennis and golf and retained a keen interest in the weather and the stars from his sea-going days. He loved his animals and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving family: Muriel, his wife of 53 years, his children,
Karen Louise Fraser of Sausalito, Ca, Sarah Fraser Groce of Greensboro, NC, and Andrew Neil Fraser of Bentonville, AR , his 6 grand children: Elizabeth Christine Groce, Christopher Fraser Groce, Will Matthew Groce and Ian Charles Fraser, Mary Catherine Fraser, and Claire Elise Fraser as well as his son-in-law, Dr. Jay Groce and daughter-in-law Susan Fraser. And of course his loving pets, Bess, Tavish and Smokey.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 9 at Hanes Lineberry, North Elm Street Chapel.
