Aunt Ora was a special aunt dear to my heart.  Always supportive and encouraging, she brought joy to my life and to the Calhoun family. I treasure the countless memories I have of her.

Every time I bake Ora's Plain Cake, I remember her fondly.  She usually brought this dessert to the Calhoun Get-together held twice yearly, and it was always delicious.  I loved Aunt Ora dearly, and I will always remember her cutting my wedding cake, just one more fond memory.

So many memories!  Aunt Ora was a jewel.  She took me to the beach several times, gave me a beautiful bracelet when I graduated from college, and cut the cake at my wedding.  I adored her!

Aunt Ora was my mom's younger sister, and I loved her dearly.  She took me on beach trips, supported me as I grew up, and cut the cake at my wedding.  She was such a classy lady, and I enjoyed every minute that I spent with her.


I had the honor of meeting Ora a few years ago when I visited my dear friend Kathy in Greensboro.   Kathy was very close to her grandmother and shared wonderful stories and moments of her grandmother’s life.  Ora was a sweet, strong, independent, and loving person who lived an admirable life.  Praying the memories of Ora bring comfort and smiles to Kathy and all who loved her. 

Chip and I send our love and prayers to each of you.  Aunt Ora was such an important part of the Calhoun Family, and we loved her dearly.  She cut the cake at our wedding nearly 45 years ago.   She and I shared a special connection.

Ora was my friend and neighbor.  She was so kind and nurturing, always thinking of others.  She’d make meals for friends and church members, whenever they were going through a tough time.  That’s the way she expressed her thoughtfulness.  Sometimes, on super fun days, she’d call me up around 11:00am, and say, “Bring your containers, I’ve been cooking.”  She’d share salmon patties, potato soup, green beans, corn bread…
Her church friends loved her Kentucky Derby Pie, and her frozen fruit cups.  So did I, of course.  Luckily, I managed to get the recipes.

Frozen Fruit Cups: 1 pint sour cream, ¾ cup sugar, 2 tbsp lemon juice, ½ tsp salt, ¼ cup chopped maraschino cherries, 1/3 cup chopped pecans, 8 oz crushed pineapple drained, 1 banana sliced thinly).  

Derby Pie:  1 cup sugar, ½ cup flour – mix good with fork.
2 eggs, slightly beaten, 1 stick butter, melted, 1 cup chopped pecans, 1 cup choc chips, 1 tsp vanilla, pie crust.

Sunday mornings, I’d drop her off at church, then I’d feed the cats at Beacon Place.  I’d pick her up, and we’d go to Oakcrest restaurant and share pancakes and eggs.  We had great conversations, sitting across the table from each other.

You were a good friend, Ora.  I love you and miss you.  Thank you.
