Reba Lee Stowe was born August 19, 1939 in the Dry Fork community just outside of Danville Virginia. She grew up on a small family farm during the war years, with a cow, chickens and of course cats. She was the youngest of five daughters and said it was like having four extra "mothers" always telling her what to do. After the older sisters married and left home, she was very close to her mother and remembered her always telling her you have to "root little pig or die!"
Reba decided to go to nursing school in Danville instead of college, since there was little or no tuition. After graduation she moved to Greensboro to work as a registered nurse at Cone Hospital and then Wesley Long. Not happy with floor duty, she became a recovery room nurse, but after graduating from the Charity Hospital School of Anesthesia in New Orleans, Reba worked as a certified nurse anesthetist for the rest of her career. She retired about 2002 and best enjoyed cooking, the arts and traveling. Reba never married and is survived by the love of her life and best friend, Bill Hanling of Greensboro, her older sister Bettie West of Richmond Virginia and eight nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Also many thanks to friend and caregiver, Faye Clayton, for her help during the past year and a half.
A celebration of life memorial service for Reba will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N Elm St, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401. The family will receive friends following the service with a reception.
