

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, in Greensboro. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Born May 4, 1942, at Sternberger Hospital, in Greensboro, to the late Robert Beery Jackson and Margaret “Peggy” Jackson Payne, Mr. Jackson a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church since 1942. Richard served in the United States Army from 1959 until 1961. He joined the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department in 1967; graduated from the Greensboro Police Academy in April of 1968; was promoted to Rank of Detective in 1972; and was later promoted to Detective Sergeant in 1978. In 1981 Richard was appointed to Head of The Major Crimes Unit in 1981 and stayed there until 1988. He was appointed to the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) as a Hostage Negotiator in July of 1985 and served in that capacity until his retirement. Richard was then promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant assigned to The Field Operations Division in 1988 and remained there until his retirement in 1992. He attended the Southern Police Institute at The University of Louisville and completed his 81st Administration Officers Course in May of 1989 and was awarded the John R. Weiss Award. Richard graduated from Guilford Technical Community College, earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science; was awarded Outstanding Associate in Applied Science Graduate; and Highest Academic Achievement Award . He was employed as a part-time Instructor in the Criminal Justice Department and various Rookie School Classes at Guilford Technical Community College from 1979 until 1993. Richard later was employed as an Investigator with The North Carolina Public Defender’s Office from 1993 until 1997 and was also licensed by the state of North Carolina as a Private Investigator.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter and best friend, Kimberly Jackson White of Greensboro and her husband Thomas Martin “Skip” White, Jr.; grandson, Sean Thomas White; granddaughter, Brittany Lee White; brothers, Robert Denis Jackson and wife Jane of Paff Town, Kim Payne and wife Brenda of Climax, and James Washington “J.W.” Payne and wife Jewel of Stokesdale; sister, Peggy Payne Deatherage and husband George of Reidsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Tuesday evening, January 7, 2014, at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel and other times at the home of Kimberly and Skip White.
