Ruby Whitley

Ruby was born on January 15, 1927, in Danville, Virginia. She graduated from George Washington High School where she played basketball. She began her career in the banking business. She retired from Ciba Geigy in 1992, but continued to work as a consultant for the company until she was 85. Ruby was well respected and loved by both her coworkers and peers. Ruby was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and devoted wife. She always put her family before herself. Ruby loved to bowl and play bridge in her spare time. She had a love for cooking and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and made the best homemade hash browns and potato salad you have ever eaten. Ruby loved to travel and considered herself lucky to be able to visit places like Hawaii, Germany, and Las Vegas. One of the most memorable trips she ever took was to France to retrace the steps her husband took during World War II. Her favorite place to travel was the beach.

Ruby was preceded in death and met at the gates of Heaven by her husband, Hubert Whitley, son, David Whitley, brother, Bill Hines, granddaughter, Ashley Carroll, son in law, Pat Carroll, and grandson, Zachary Whitley.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Kathy Carroll, her daughter, Teresa Tindall (Ron), son, Mark Whitley, granddaughter, Dana Reece (Keith), Niki Landreth (Ed), DJ Whitley (Katie), Coty Rogers (John), and Cassidy Tindall. She will also be missed by her great grandchildren, Ashley and Grace Wyrick, Justin and Caleb Fowler, Charlie Whitley, Jax and Luca Rogers, and Nathan Whitley.

The family would like to thank the staff of Clapps Nursing Center for always loving and taking such good care of their “Miss Ruby”. A special thanks goes out to her sweet Trina, the “Ruby Whisperer”, for loving her like she was her own mother.

Purple was Ruby’s signature color, and to honor her memory, throw on your favorite shade of purple, lavender, lilac, or Periwinkle and share sunshine and love with others, because that is what Ruby did every day of her life.
