August 31, 1970– June 5, 2025.
Russell Bruce Gamwell passed away at his home in North Carolina on June 5, at the age of 54.
Born in Milford, CT he was a son, a brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his parents Susan Smith Gamwell & Bruce Gamwell of North Carolina, his siblings Tracy Gamwell of North Carolina, Beth Guerrette (m. Ben Guerrette) of California, Gregory Gamwell (m. Kate Decker) of Massachusetts, and his many beloved nieces & nephews.
Russ loved and cherished his time outdoors, where the sky was wide and the noise of the world was quiet for a while. Nature gave him peace. He was happiest outside amongst the trees with the smell of fresh cut green grass. He also enjoyed chopping wood, taking his nieces & nephews fishing and giving them joy rides on his golf cart.
He found companionship in animals that others might overlook including lizards, snakes, and birds. He especially loved his African Grey parrot Shamus, and cared for him with a quiet devotion that showed the gentleness inside him. Russ also loved the many dogs he cared for in his life.
Russ left an impression on those he met. He loved meeting people and sparking new conversations. His friendships were sincere and important.
His life reminds us that kindness matters, especially to those who wrestle with burdens we may not fully understand.
“Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven’s claws.” - Jim Morrison.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Russell’s honor & legacy to The New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary.
