She was born in Greensboro to Earl Leon Greene, Jr and Marjorie Fields Greene. In her early years she lived in Norfolk, VA and Dallas, TX before moving to Greensboro. Sandy graduated from Grimsley Senior High in 1963 and Wingate Junior College in 1965. She was married in May 1968 in Honolulu, Hawaii during her husband’s R&R from Vietnam. Sandy and Merritt adopted their son in September 1976, and about ten years later became foster parents for two Vietnamese refugee children.
Sandy was very talented in many handcrafts. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crochet, needlepoint, quilting and beading. She helped start and was the first president of the Greensboro Quilters Guild. Sandy will always be remembered for her engaging smile and fun-loving personality.
Sandy enjoyed an active lifestyle and being with people. She and her husband raced their one-design sailboat for almost 25 years throughout many eastern states. Her interest in housing design kept her involved in the construction of several homes, one a self-contracted solar home. Later in life Sandy and her husband lived aboard their 38-foot cruising sailboat that they sailed to the Bahamas for several winters. She enjoyed many years of Scottish country dancing with the local dance society. Sandy made many close and lasting friends from such activities.
