Born in Stony Point, NC, on Oct. 24, 1922, to the late Noah B. and Lula B. Dagenhart, Stella cherished her family and friends.
Stella and her siblings were born in the white house on their farm near the Catawba River. In her youth, she and her family spent summer months raising crops, canning food, and making fruit preserves for the winter. All the girls learned from their mother and her ancestry, how to become excellent Southern cooks and seamstresses.
Shortly after graduating from Sharon High School in Stony Point, Stella met the love of her life William T. Comer, Jr. The two were married by W.T.’s father on Aug. 8, 1942. On Oct. 2, 1942 W. T. was called by the Army to serve in WWII. They were both true examples of “The Greatest Generation”.
Stella and W.T. moved to Greensboro after W.T. was offered the Head Baker position at Greensboro Country Club and that’s when folks started calling him “Bill”. The couple resided in Greensboro for 61 years, where they raised their three children.
Stella and W.T. both retired from Soabar Graphics, where Stella was a supervisor for seventeen years. After retiring, during the holidays, the two loved to bake pies and deliver them to neighbors, friends, and various businesses.
She always enjoyed spending time with her children and their families, which included 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Above all Stella loved serving The Lord and became a member of several local churches; most recently she was a member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Circle #1 and The Ladies Bible Class.
In addition to Stella’s sweet and beautiful smile, she was most recognized for never saying an unkind word about anyone and for putting others before herself. She led with a gentle hand and was a wonderful listener. To be as considerate as their mother would be the ultimate goal of her children. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, accomplished cook, talented seamstress, and quilt maker. Stella was always a diligent worker who before having to be moved in to skilled nursing care, could be seen working in her yard. She inspired others with her determination, love, faith, and grace.
Stella's true joy and utmost getaway was returning to her Stony Point, NC homeplace, which remains standing on the farm and serves as a family gathering place.
In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William T. Comer, Jr.; three of their children who passed at birth, Judy Ann Comer, William T. Comer, III and Darrell Keith Comer; a grandson, Charles Lee Hawley II; a brother, Paul Dagenhart; two of her sisters, Ella D. Drum Morrison and Ruth D. Guy Stikeleather; her half-brothers, Anderson, Plato, Olney, Glenn and Rowe Dagenhart ; and half-sisters, Maud Dagenhart and Elsie D. Gantt.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Myra Comer Atkins and husband, Mike, of McLeansville, NC, Janice Comer Hawley and husband, Lee, of Greensboro, NC and Terry L. Comer and wife, Danielle, of Westfield, NC; grandchildren, Jennifer Atkins Brown (Marty), Jamie Atkins Pearson Atkins (fiancé James), Kristin Waddell Seale (Johnny III), William Daniel Comer, William Dewey (Bill) Hawley, Stephen Michael Comer and Ethan Thomas Comer; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Michael Atkins, Mackenzie Brown, Alexis Pearson, Natalie Brown, identical twins Jordan Pearson and Julia Pearson, Johnny Seale,IV, and Harrison Seale; sisters, Mary Lou D. Hager of Troutman and Irene D. Barnes and husband, Devon, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Rowe (Louise) Dagenhart.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Maple Grove Health and Rehabilitation and the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
Flowers will be appreciated, or you may make a donation in her memory to Marvin United Methodist Church, Stony Point Baptist Church, both in Stony Point, NC; or Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC.
