Susan Seth Griswold passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27th, 2025 surrounded by her family. Born August 31, 1934 to Clarissa Clark Seth and Joseph Bruff Seth, she grew up in Baltimore with frequent visits to friends and family on the Eastern Shore. Music and singing were central to her family during her early life. She attended Girl’s Latin High School and Randolph Macon Women’s College. After graduating, she enjoyed working as a legislative assistant for US Senator Beall in Washington DC.
As a bridesmaid in the summer of 1958, Sue met the groom’s first cousin, William Shepard Griswold, Jr. “Shep” from Greensboro who flew his plane between North Carolina and Maryland to see her. Their long distance courtship literally “swept her off her feet” and created some exciting stories along the way. They were married in Baltimore in 1960 during a memorable storm that dropped over 17 inches of snow. They settled in Greensboro which they called home for the rest of their lives.
Sue was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She loved using her nurturing and artistic skills to tend to her garden and make beautiful flower arrangements, holiday wreaths, and decorations. She was an active member for many years in the Junior League of Greensboro, the Junior Dogwood Garden Club, the Wednesday Literature Club, the Greensboro Debutante Club, and the Altar Guild at Holy Trinity Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Shep. She is survived by her children William Shepard Griswold, III (Carrie) and Susan Griswold Herst (Lawrence), and her grandsons, Benjamin Shepard Herst (Samantha), Seth Alexander Herst (Kylie), Charles Baron Herst, and William Shepard Griswold, IV (Elizabeth), and her great granddaughter, Eleanor June Herst.
The family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Well-Spring Retirement Community.
A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, January 9th at 11AM with a reception to follow in the Special Occasions Room at Well-Spring, 4100 Wellspring Drive, Greensboro.
