Syvie was born June 9, 1938, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and was the apple of her parents’ eye to the late Warren Corle Landis and Syvie Hughes Landis.
She is survived by her children Tracey Steele Cloninger, Kristen Cloninger Lancaster (Bill), and Dana Cloninger Herndon and her grandchildren Will, John and Teddy Lancaster and Addy and Craig Herndon.
Upon graduating from Eastern High School in Baltimore, Maryland, she attended Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, DC, receiving a degree in Kindergarten Education and then attended Bard-Avon School, receiving a certificate in Stenography. Many years later in 1993, she proudly completed her undergraduate degree at UNC-G.
Syvie was creative and enjoyed expressing herself through drawing, scrapbooking, needlepointing, and designing shadow boxes. It was this passion that allowed her the opportunity to participate in the execution of one of her most loved pieces. As part of the Bicentennial celebration, Syvie, along with eleven other members of the Greensboro Junior League, completed an embroidery piece for the City of Greensboro. The wall hanging was an architectural rendering of downtown Greensboro at the time. The Bicentennial gift was beautifully and painstakingly stitched together at Syvie’s home and was presented as part of a special program during a city council meeting and remained on the south wall in the Council Chamber through January of 2019.
Family was everything to Syvie. She especially loved gathering for the holidays. The house was decorated beautifully, and “Mimi” saw to it that Santa made an early stop for the grandchildren. Filled with smiles, laughter, and chatter, the house buzzed with excitement as the family ate a delicious meal and opened their gifts. Summertime provided another opportunity to gather at Wrightsville Beach for the annual vacation where many memories were created and old stories shared.
A private memorial will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024. Then, at 1:45pm, friends are invited to attend a reception at Hanes Lineberry at 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, 200 North Davie Street, Suite 201, Greensboro, NC 27401.
