Don was born in Greensboro to the late James Harvey and Minnie Beaver Nall on April 22, 1929. He proudly served in the US Navy on the USS Valley Forge. As a veteran, Don enjoyed the annual reunions of Happy Valley Reunion Club. He worked as a layout operator for Western Electric, retiring as soon as he was able. In addition to spending time with his grandchildren, some of his favorite things were listening to bluegrass music, dirt track racing, working the daily crossword puzzle, and watching NASCAR. He cheered for the Greensboro Generals and the Atlanta Braves. Bear Creek held a special place in Don's heart from an early age. He loved trips to the beach and always took a different route to get there! You could count on Don to have read the local paper and have an opinion (that might surprise you) on the politics of the moment. He was a keen observer and loved to tell a story, but if you didn’t watch out, he’d pull your leg. He once picked up Lydia in Jamestown. And he was almost the owner of mule.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Paul Brackett; and siblings, Dorothy Blair, Dallas Nall, Glenn Nall, and Imogene Garber. He is survived by his inimitable wife of 64 years, Elsie McGee Nall; children, Karen Brackett and husband Richard of Stokesdale, Kathy Johnson and husband Ralph Joel of Pleasant Garden, Rhonda Kaye Nall of Greensboro, and Donald Scott Nall and wife Donna of Ramseur; grandchildren, Adam Brackett, Sarah Colonna, Emily Johnson, Rosemary Johnson, Dugan Nall, and Shea Nall; and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, December 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry on Vanstory Street. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 22.
Donations may be sent in memory of Don to Immanuel Baptist Church, 2432 W. Gate City Blvd. Greensboro, NC 27403 (earmarked for the Kitchen/Bereavement Committee).
