Tommy was married to his wife, Barbara, for 58 years. He was an amazing "Girl Dad" to his three daughters: Yvonne Hamilton, Sandra Ruppert, and Lorie Davis. He was also happy to welcome three sons-in-law into the family: Isaac Hamilton, Rick Ruppert, and Jackson Davis. Tommy was the proudest Grandpa to Carmen and Chloe Hamilton, Jacob and Ethan Ruppert, and Chase and Caroline Davis. He was a loving uncle to his two nephews, Pete and Stevie (Lisa) Williams.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Pauline Smith; his brother, Eugene Smith; and his sister, Martha Anne Williams.
Throughout his career, Tommy owned multiple businesses. The longest-running one was McBride's Curb Market in Lexington, NC. After closing McBride's, he opened a storage building lot in Kernersville with Bunce Buildings. After retirement, Tommy enjoyed traveling and cheering on his grandchildren at sports events and school activities. Tommy was a quiet man; some would say it was because he was surrounded by four vocal women. He served as a Deacon for many years and formed lifelong friendships through his church family. He always chose to find the best in people and in each day. Whenever asked how he was doing, his common response was, "Any better, I couldn't stand it." He loved watching sports, both in person and on TV, with his favorite team being the Atlanta Braves.
A gathering of friends and loved ones to celebrate Tommy's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
