Samuel Eric Hackney, age 61, passed away from a heart attack at his place of work on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. Born July 8, 1959, he lived in DuPont, Indiana. He graduated high school early and then started his job at Delta Faucet. After marrying his now ex-wife, they moved to Greensburg, Indiana to be closer to his work. He was heavily involved in many local bands (since his teen years) and extensively performed around the surrounding area. In addition, he loved to go on camping trips to Mammoth Cave with his daughter Sara and has been an active camper there since 1991. One of his proudest moments was seeing his daughter attend college at Ball State as he never got to attend himself even though he had been incredibly intelligent. Those who knew him and called him a friend knew of his love for music and performing, his obsession with dune buggies and cool cars, his love of 80s hair bands, and of course his carefree, happy go lucky personality. Sam will be remembered most for his funny pictures he shared on social media that he spent hours making just to make people laugh, his sense of humor, unstoppable work ethic, his caring personality, his silly antics to make you smile, his gorgeous head of curly hair, and his deep love for his only daughter.

He is preceded in death by his brother Kenny Hackney, his father Samuel Hackney, and many more.

His memory will be kept alive by his daughter, Sara Hackney; his mom, Bette Hackney; his sisters, Marilyn Christian and Carolin Roy; and his many nieces and nephews as well as his many friends and coworkers whose lives he touched along the way.

A visitation for his family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Monday, November 2, 2020 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm, observing CDC guidelines. A celebration of life ceremony and sharing of memories will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at 4:00 pm with visitation from 2:00 until the time of the services. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory at Melody Mart, 129 E. Main Street, Greensburg, Indiana 47240. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.gilliland-howe.com

Sammy you always made me smile from the moment I met you back in 1989 before your band played at my wedding. We all had such a great time hanging out with the band. You never stopped loving life and believing that there was good to be found in all people. You will be missed dearly. Hugs my friend!

I worked with Sam at Gecom. We worked on the Chrysler Cinch Line together. Sam would make our day a little brighter by acting silly and making us laugh. He would help out when needed to make things easier. Sam was a very kind and caring man. I’ll miss you Sam, ❤️

Sammy was one of a kind. There was never another like him to come before and there will never be another to come after. A gentle soul that had no enemies and was kind to everyone. A sense of humor and smile that could light up a room. An inspiration to so many people for so many reasons - for stepping up and being the absolute best Dad on the planet. Sam also inspired different generations of local musicians and guitar players including myself. He was always so humble, never claimed to be better than anyone. In fact, anytime we were together for various jams, he was always willing to lend myself and others his own guitar to play. Sammy will be missed by many, but most importantly, his memory will remain alive through the stories and memories shared by everyone who ever came in contact with him. We love you, Sammy.

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to a dear friend that I have known for over 35 years. There are not enough words in the English language to describe the kind of man that Sam was. He was the kindest, most compassionate and caring man that I have ever known. He always put others in front of himself. If you needed a shirt, he would give you the one off his back. It was always such a pleasure to login into Facebook, just to see what kind of shenanigans he posted. I think that bringing happiness to others was a mission of his.
I met Sam back in 1984 when I joined the Rampage band then after a year or so, we formed the Backfire band. For the next 5 years, we spent countless hours practicing and playing gigs in local bars across southeastern Indiana. I believe we even ventured over to Ohio a couple of times and played our rock-n-roll there at what you would call a "knife & gun" club. With me being the only female in the band, the other members treated me like a sister. Sam would always come to my defense if any men in the audience got out of line or made rude comments to me. He was so concerned that I was going to lift my bass amp and hurt myself so he was always helping me.
Sam, you will be so deeply and sadly missed. I'm so thankful for the memories that I have of you and I will cherish those for the rest of my life. May you rock those Golden Gates as you climb the "Stairway to Heaven"...R.I.P. my dear friend. ❤️🙏🤘

I will never forget the first time I met Sam at Delta. It didn’t take long to realize the true Sam. A loving and kind man whom would give everything he had to his daughter and work family. He was there for me on some very hard days. Taught me so much. We may have lost contact after I got let go of Delta, but he never stopped talking to me if he saw me out. Sam you will forever be missed. Prayers to Sarah and his family

Sam was a part of my every day life for almost 28yrs. We worked at Delta together. He was one of the most kind hearted people I knew, always with a smile and a joke.😊 I remember watching him with his band through the years and how much he loved music. His daughter Sara was the subject of many of his stories. I remember when Barb was pregnant with you Sara and how happy he was to becoming a Dad.💕 His smile and his chuckle is what I will always remember the most about him. After we all lost our jobs every time I would run into him while I was still living in the Burg he would always end our conversation with “you take care girl”...... I will miss his wonderful FB posts. Now he is in heaven with all our wonderful Delta family that has passed before him.....Till we meet again God Speed my friend, and God bless you Sara.🥰
