William “Bill” Eugene Swango, 80 of Sandusky, Indiana passed away with family by his side on March 3, 2018. Bill was born on February 2, 1938 in rural Decatur County, the son of Charles and Ethel (Lewis) Swango. He attended Greensburg Schools then moved to Clarksburg. It was at Clarksburg High School where he met his high school sweetheart Phyllis Jones, and they graduated together in 1956. On April 5, 1958 they were married at Clarksburg Christian Church, this would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. Bill was a lifelong Decatur County farmer. He farmed along with his father and 2 brothers, then later with his nephew – PJ Swango. He also worked at Delta Faucet and Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation. He always enjoyed music, dancing and a good card game – he played cards with family, at Chippy’s (men and children only allowed) in New Point, the Sandusky Mill or Richardson’s Barn. He moved a tenant house through their fields from another farm to his current farm and lived for 45 years. He was a member of the Clarksburg Christian Church, Investment Club and Tuesday Night Card Club. Survivors include his wife Phyllis; five daughters – Denise “Dee” (Dan) Knueven, Joan “Joni” Schmidter, Amy Hicks, Suzanne (Mark) Parmer, and Belinda “Billi” (Chad) Bruner; and his baby sister Sue Kitchin-Reed; nine grandchildren which he lovingly nicknamed each: Alicia (Brian) Beck “Rabbit”, Erik Knueven “Ox”, Layne Grimes “Frog”, Grant Bruner “Tadpole”, Cole Parmer “Turtle”, Sidney Parmer “Ladybug”, Abigail Schmidter “Bunny”, Clayton Schmidter “Puppy” and William Hicks “Catfish” and one great granddaughter Aria Beck “Button”. Sister-in-laws: Helen Swango, Fae Swango, Carol Hilbert and Brother-in-laws: Bob Jones and David (Kim) Jones. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and Phyllis’s parent’s – Walter and Flossie Jones, his two brothers Charles “Tom” Swango, Howard “Sis” Swango and niece Carol Swango-Wilson. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 8, 2018 also at the funeral home with Rev. Jerran Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Rossburg Cemetery.
