Philip Lee Newbauer

Philip (Phil) Lee Newbauer passed away with his family by his side on his 80th birthday, Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the JAG Healthcare Center in Union City, Ohio. With the support of his family along the way, Phil fought a long, hard battle against Alzheimer’s. He gave it his all until the very end.

Phil was born on February 15, 1946, in Union City, Indiana to the late Herschel and Eileen (Marshall) Newbauer. In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by his siblings, Rose Dockery, Doris Rice, Mike Newbauer and Steve Newbauer.

Phil is survived by his wife of 52 years, Fonda (Zacharias) Newbauer, whom he married on June 30, 1973; his children, Whitney (Mike) Christman and Zachary (Andrea) Newbauer; his grandchildren, Kennedi Strawser, Wyatt Christman, Gentry Newbauer and Camden Newbauer; and his sister-in-law, Linda Newbauer.

Phil was a 1964 graduate of Greenville High School. After high school, he served his country honorably in Vietnam with the United States Army. He was a member of the 169th Engineering Battalion. He worked as a mechanic for Runkle’s in his earlier working years and retired from Whirlpool after more than 20 years of service. His hobbies included spending time with his grandkids and attending their events, playing golf, going fishing, and playing church volleyball. He will be remembered for the love he had for his family, especially his grandchildren, his willingness to help others, for always smiling and laughing, and for always having a joke to tell.

A Celebration of Life Service with full military honors will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 23, 2026, in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, 1499 North Broadway with Pastor Alan Leach officiating. The family wishes to invite guests to come in casual attire.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
