Anne was born in Greenville, SC, on December 18, 1931, to Evelyn Fuller and the Reverend Grover Cleveland Smith. She was the youngest of seven sisters. She never knew her father, as he passed away unexpectedly soon after she was born. Her mother was suddenly a single mother faced with raising Anne and her sisters in an era when governmental support was unavailable. Evelyn was a registered nurse and found work as the plant nurse at a local textile mill. These mills were quite hazardous and her job was challenging but she managed to work full time and raise seven children on her own. Anne was cared for by her older siblings while their mother was working.
Anne recognized the importance of education at a young age. She graduated from Parker High School in 1950. She continued her education at Greenville General School of Nursing as well as at Furman University. She received her BSN nursing degree in 1953. She worked as a nurse for many years and was licensed as a registered nurse in four states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Missouri. Early in her career she realized that her strengths and interests were in the field of psychiatric nursing. She received several nursing certifications and was nominated for numerous professional service awards during her tenure. The last years of her career were spent at Marshall Pickens Hospital where she served as nursing supervisor from 1982 to 1996.
Anne was known for her refined sense of style. She admired the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie School architectural style. She commissioned the first of her two Prairie School style houses in the 1960s, long before Wright was recognized as the preeminent modern American architect that he is today.
Anne was a devoted and caring mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Anne was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Thomas F. Furlong. She was also predeceased by her former spouse, James M. Lane, M.D., with whom she shared three sons, as well as by her older sisters, Ruth McKeown, Sara Kidd, Mary (Tincie) Morris, Alene Potter, Jean Teague, and Hester Jordan.
Anne is survived by her sons, James R. Lane; Stuart P. Lane, M.D. (Kimberly) and children Ethan, Olivia, and Jackson; Stephen F. Lane, M.D. (Sandy) and children, Michael, Blake, and Dylan. She is survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews and their families.
