Born in Johnson City, TN Betty was the daughter of the late William E. Lyle and Vida C. Lyle. She is preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen and her brother, Bill. Her sister, Helen resides in Boxford, Mass. The Lord called home her husband, Jim in 2003, along with her son, Mark in 2008, Jim Jr in 2016 and her youngest child, Margaret in 2019. Through it all, Betty’s faith in her Lord never wavered. She continued to trust in God, His plan for her life and that of her beloved family. Betty leaves behind a daughter, Lisa and her husband, Johnny Whitted of Greer; Granddaughters, Elizabeth Hodges and her husband Aaron of Greenville, Rebecca and Meredith Boensch of Mount Pleasant; Grandsons, James Seward III of Sudbury Ontario Canada and Matthew Whitted of Greer. Also surviving is her son-in-law, Michael Boensch of Mount Pleasant; daughter-in-law, Lynn Seward of Greer; nieces and nephew, Billy, Kathy, Kim, Jennifer and Debbie. She loved you all like her own. Betty’s greatest joy of 2021 was becoming a great grandmother to Oliver James Hodges, whom she loved dearly. Oliver you are truly a blessing and bright spot in your Gaga’s life.
Betty was a graduate of East Tennessee State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. After several years of living in SC, TN, and NC Betty and Jim settled in Greenville, SC with their four children in 1969. They became active members of First Presbyterian Church and continued to be for 52 years. Betty was a member of the Wedding Committee and a devoted member of the Agape Sunday School Class. She enjoyed attending the Wednesday Lunchtime Bible Study and was there the final week of her life. She loved to be outside. To sit on her screened porch and watch and listen to the birds, admire her beautiful flowers and read. She loved the mountains and the majesty they represented. Psalm 121 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my strength” held true for Betty. She was the strongest woman her daughter knew.
Aside from being a wife and mother, Betty became a Realtor and enjoyed serving her clients at Joy Real Estate, The Furman Company and Coldwell Banker Caine. Her friends and colleagues at the Caine Company meant the world to her and she treasured each and every one of you. She spent her spare time attending water aerobics, working in her yard, playing bridge with different groups, reading books, listening to talk radio, attending her grandsons football and lacrosse games and cheering on the Gamecocks and Tigers. Maybe she was one of the few who loved them both. Betty was a beautiful, kind, caring Christian woman who loved her family and her friends. She faced triumphs and great tragedies and through it all she trusted in Jesus. Well done good and faithful servant, may you rest in peace.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 from 10:00am until 10:45am at First Presbyterian Church at 200 W Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601. A funeral service will follow in the sanctuary at 11:00 am.
