Dr. Cecil Quattlebaum passed away on March 24, 2016. He was born on September 5, 1939, in Florence, SC, to Louise Magee and Cecil Landon Quattlebaum who taught him to love God and all humankind. Much of his life was spent helping others. Dr. Quattlebaum graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1957 and from Furman University in 1961 where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Furman Singers, Furman Band, Intramural Athletics, and Men’s Honor Court. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1965 and completed an internship at Greenville General Hospital. After serving in the Medical Corps of the US Navy from 1966-68 (Beaufort, SC Naval Hospital and USS Oglethorpe), he returned to GGH and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He remained in the Greenville area and practiced OB-GYN until his retirement in July 2015. “Dr. Q" was known for his medical skills, his compassionate and comforting spirit, and his wit. (He never met a joke he didn’t like.) He was a Fellow in the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was beloved by patients and colleagues alike. He served on the Ethics Committee of the South Carolina Medical Association. Much joy was brought to his later years when he taught Greenville Health System OB-GYN residents and helped train students from the USC School of Medicine who spent time here as externs. One of his greatest honors was hooding a young mentee during her graduation from MUSC last year when he was celebrating his 50th Class Reunion. He loved nature from the mountains to the coast and could make any seed or sapling grow. He had a special affinity for bonsai trees. He was an avid fan of Furman Athletics. He loved music of any genre, but was particularly drawn to gospel music. He was a member of First Baptist Greenville and called himself a sinner, saved by grace. Dr. Quattlebaum is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Dimmerling Quattlebaum; a son, Lan Quattlebaum; two daughters, Ana Gibbs (Jim) and Rolyn Rollins (Matt), all of Greenville; a son, Darin Dimmerling (Vanja) of Chesapeake, VA; ten grandchildren, Yates and Larsen Quattlebaum, Isaac and Forrester Gibbs, Jack, Celie Ann and Lucy Rollins, and Sarah, Zoe and Jack Dimmerling. He is also survived by a brother, Bob Quattlebaum (Maxine), of Hendersonville, NC, a sister, Lynda Epps (Carroll) of Irmo, SC, and the mother of three of his children, Dr. Ann Anshus Quattlebaum of Greenville. Visitation will take place in the Narthex of First Baptist Church Greenville from 10:30-11:45 AM, Thursday, March 31. A celebration of his life will follow at noon in the Sanctuary. A private interment into the church columbarium will take place prior to the events. The family would like to thank attending physicians, nurses and Caris Healthcare for their gracious love and support during his time of illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
