Dorothy Jean Breazeale

Dorothy Jean Breazeale, 81, of Union City, GA, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Southwest Christian Hospice. Born in Spartanburg, SC on December 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Vernon and Martha Dickerson Breazeale, who were longtime residents of Spartanburg before making Greenville, SC, their home. ‘Dot’ was a member of Bethel Methodist Church while a resident of Spartanburg, a 1953 graduate of Spartan High, and earned a BA Degree in English at the University of North Carolina, and an MA Degree in Guidance at the University of Georgia.

She began her career in Education teaching English Literature at Southwest High and was on the staffs of Sylvan High and Therrell High as a Guidance Counselor, retiring in 1994. Dot valued the interaction with students and parents, implementing the premise that every student had promise and potential. Some of her memberships include Delta Kappa Gamma, International Education Society, serving as Chapter President and President of the Atlanta Council, a registered Arbitrator with the American Association of Arbitrators, the Georgia Association of Educators, and President of the Shannon Villas Homeowners Association.

An avid traveler throughout her adult life, Dot enjoyed trips to almost all fifty US states, and participated in a variety of excursions and tours with her Senior Group and the Red Hat Club. She delighted in visiting her in-state and out-of-state friends and family. While a Counselor, she was granted a year’s sabbatical, with Italy as her base, which provided an opportunity to tour much of Europe. On later foreign trips, she visited the Greek Isles and a return to some favorite sites in England and France.

Until her health declined, Dot was a resident of Golden Oaks, a Union City retirement community, and was an active member of Southwest Christian Church, enjoying the friendships and associations in both groups. Dot was known for her cheerfulness, for her humor and positive attitude…she was sure she would be the next Publishers Clearing House winner, for her spirited support of the Atlanta Falcons, and for being an enthusiastic Elvis fan. Always ready to help others, Dot was generous, considerate, and loyal to her family and friends, and, of course, ever eager to travel.

Survivors include her two sisters, Eleanor B. Troutman (Gregory Troutman, Sr.) of Atlanta, GA, and Aliene B. Herin of Greer, SC, nephews – Greg Troutman, Jr. (Ann) Pawleys Island, SC, Brad Troutman (Reta) Atlanta, GA, Steve Herin, Evergreen, CO, Jerry Herin (Amanda), Spartanburg, SC, and nieces- Gail H. Wilson (Mark) Fayetteville, NC, and Caroline H. Holtel (Chris), Greenville, SC, and six grand nieces and nephews – William, Michael, Dante, Hailey, Dakota and Hunter, and her Dickerson and Breazeale aunts and cousins in SC, NC, and FL.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 2:00 in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southwest Christian Church Building Fund, 504 Center Street, Palmetto, GA 30268.
