So many great memories about Ed from our days at ServiStar. A true gentleman with an unbelievable sense of humor. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

My sincerest condolences to the family.  Lots of great memories Of Ed from our visits to South Carolina.  May he Rest In Peace!  Love and hugs to everyone.

I’m not much with words so I’m going to keep this brief. When I stop to think about the man Pop was... all I know is that he was my hero. I feel like a lot of the time he’s one of the only people that believed in me without question. He even gave me his truck because he knew I needed it. He was always happy and excited for us to come visit. His house was always a happy place to be because he was full of laughter and he loved to joke around.  I hope I can live up to the man he was and make him proud. 


Pop could always make a huge event out of the smallest occasions. He was a family man through and through and had an easy way of making us all feel known and valued. I already miss being pulled away from family gatherings to talk about our DIY projects and learn a few tips from a master doer. 

My name is Daniel and my middle name is Edward. My parents gave me that middle name after my Grandfather,  my “Pop”, Ed Smith. I feel like I’ve won the lottery with that name because it has a magical quality to it. Let me explain...

My Pop was always busy with projects. He was always doing something. He packed me up and moved me many times. I wish I would have counted all of the couches and beds he moved, the big and small house projects, anything that needed to be fixed, maintained, or improved. And the wildest thing, he thrived in a time before YouTube. He just knew how to do everything. 

My Pop was always doing these projects for the aid of others. He was kind in the most authentic way. Some people have to work really hard to be nice but it was natural for my Pop. Being nice to others was effortless for him. Like an Olympic ice skater who flips three times in the air, over ice, and stares into the audience with no fear, this was my Pop. He taught me that if you say “yes” enough times for the benefit of others, over yourself, you’ll always be successful and have everything that you need. All of the riches in the world cannot surpass the love of those around you. 

This ability, the dedication to always say “yes,” is the magical part of my middle name. It’s what my Pop referred to as his “Polish Power.” He never explicitly defined what he meant by Polish Power, other than noting his somewhat mysterious Polish ancestry. He would jokingly use this phrase to explain how he was able to fix something. A friendly smirk followed by “it was my Polish Power!” was the usual response to our surprised looks when he finished a complex project. Based on his behavior, I’ve taken a stab at a formal definition of Polish Power...

Polish Power is “indomitable optimism and can-do spirit applied for the benefit and well being of others.” 

Thank you, Pop, for always making me feel special and for teaching me that when you smile, the world smiles back. 


Pop was the best grandfather that a boy could ask for. He has been a major influence on every phase of my life.

As a young boy that wanted to be in the middle of everything, he would let me. If he had a hammer, then I got a hammer. If
he got a cold beer, then I got a cold apple juice. And when he got a lawn mower, by gosh, I got a lawn mower. He cared so much about spending time with me that he tricked out his old lawn mower to look like a neon Batmobile. As he cut the grass I followed in hot pursuit, saving the world, and getting prepared for that apple juice break.

As I grew older and life got more complicated Pop was there to remind us all that “crap happens” and it will all work out in the end. He also taught me that a Sports Illustrated swim suit addition calendar stuffed with a couple of $100 bills was the ultimate Christmas present for a young man.

As the real world came around and adult life hit like a ton of bricks, guess what, Pop was there too. I could always count on his help or advice on anything. He also
reminded me that as serious as adult life is, it’s just as fun to have someone “pull my finger” now, as it was when we were ridding lawnmowers, shirtless, drinking apple juice.
Poppy meant the world to us all as a family and we all have countless examples of how he was a positive influence on our life. Because of him we all know what it means to love your sweetheart, that hard work will reward you, that God is good, that cold beer is good, to always appreciate the positive things in your life, and to take the bad things with a grain of salt.

Pop may be physically gone from this earth but he will never leave our hearts.


So many wonderful memories of Ed we both have. 
He welcomed Darryl and his family into his and always was there if they needed him. Ed and I shared work days together in Greer. I was glad to see him walk thru the door because I knew he would always have a giant smile and a kind word  to make your day special.
Darryl and I will miss him. 

My name is Ryan Leppard.  My first thought when I think my Pop is that he has the biggest sentimental heart and loved his family and his grandchildren so much.  We could always depend on him to enjoy our jokes. He was always up for a good time, and when we were together there was always so much laughter.  

There was a big part of my childhood when my Mom and I got to live with Nan and Pop.  I remember taking care of the house while they traveled the country in their motor home. We couldn't wait for them to come home after months of traveling to tell us all about their adventures.  Growing up with Pop as a role model was amazing because I learned so much from him. My favorite thing was working on lawn mowers and go carts. He also taught me a lot about sports, especially how to play baseball and basketball.  The only time we disagree about sports is when the Packers are playing the Steelers.

Even my golden retriever Rusty loved Pop, especially when he was giving Rusty the entire box of treats!

 My pop has always had my back and I will remember the things taught me forever.  

What I Love About Pop, What’s Not to Love! Walking in the door to his home, I was always greeted with a strong handshake and a huge hug! He always asked me first off how I’ve been, how’s school, and never failed to ask, “how are the girls treating ya?”  You thirsty he’d ask, there’s root beer in the fridge, always having it there knowing it’s one of my favorites, just for me! One tradition, of course when I reached the appropriate age, is that he got all his grandsons the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition at Christmas with some money somewhere snuck in between the pages! It was a fun, simple tradition he did that we all looked forward to, we would laugh and joke about it and that was the best part. I will miss his infectious laugh, his smile, his hugs, his jokes and his stories, hearing Pop’s stories about being in the Army and his travels across the US were priceless. Thanks Pop for always being there for me and always being the best Pop a Grandson could have, Love You!

This old boy will be in my memories forever, the times we had working together, yes, we did some work, we laughed so much, 
shared stories, willing to help each other out, traveling together 
and I could go on and on. Most of all, Ed was a dear friend and 
will be missed by so many. 
Y'all hang in there and know how much he loved each of you.

Many years have passed but Barb &Eddie have been in our thoughts & sweet memories ....High School sweethearts and then friends in early years of babies ....He made great hamburgers and she was so beautiful ....Love and wishes of peace & comfort ....Tom & Carole


I came home the day Pop passed away and quickly wrote down my very favorite things about him:

- He never stopped working or fixing. 
-If you did something stupid he would say “crap happens. If you learned something from it, then it’s ok.”
-Every time you asked him how he was he would respond, “overworked, underpaid” and then laugh his best laugh. 
- That laugh of his was infectious and he loved a good joke (or a dumb joke).
- He always made sure you knew you were loved and never missed an opportunity to remind you. 
- He would slip us cash at Christmas and tell us to “put it away” like it was a big secret. 
- He always called on your birthday and sang “Happy Birthday” with Nan over the phone... even if he was going to see you to celebrate. Those songs got more elaborate every year. 
-He loved a cold one after a long day. 
- He loved Nan more than breathing itself and never stopped showing it. He taught the rest of us what love looks like. 
- He always always always introduced me as his “one and only granddaughter” and I LOVED it my whole life. 

I’ll miss him every day until I see him again. I can’t wait! 


Oh Susan, Sharon, Amy and Mrs. Smith, you are all in our thoughts and prayers.  We fondly remember your Dad (husband) building the most AWESOME fort out of thick ropes for T.C. in the basement of your home in Louisville!  We remember him skillfully maneuvering the most humongous motor home we’ve ever seen on many amazing trips throughout the U.S.!  And, finally, we will always remember his infectious smile, his LOVE of family, and his knack for finding out what was needed and being the one to Get ‘Er Done!  Mr. Smith will certainly be missed, but his smile and his love will last a lifetime.  Sending virtual hugs to each of you!

I loved your dad’s laugh. He was always smiling and telling jokes. He will be missed but Heaven gained an angel. 

He was such a sweet man!  He never met a stranger and always had a story to tell!  And he sure did love those great grand babies!   Love to you all....

For Ed’s Sweetheart and  his beautiful  daughters and  entire family I  have you all in my prayers.  Ed has been my neighbor and friend for the past twenty years.
