Ernie graduated from D.W. Daniel High School and attended Southern Wesleyan University before joining the U.S. Navy. He received the National Defense Service Medal while serving on the USS Marlin (SST 2), a submarine. He served at Naval Base Pascagoula and was instrumental in the clean up there after Hurricane Camille (the second most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the United States). He was transferred to the Naval Reserve, serving on the USS Bushnell (AS15) in Key West, FL.
Ernie dedicated 47 years working for Duke Energy. Much of that time was spent as an Erosion Control Specialist. He covered North and South Carolina, learning all the back roads and best restaurants in each town.
As a visionary for community, Ernie was instrumental in establishing the Colonel Elias Earle Historic District in Greenville, SC. He also served as a Commissioner for the City of Ramseur. Ernie had a passion for old houses, and the antiques that filled them. He was an avid fan of all things Clemson, especially football. In his retirement, Ernie occupied his time operating antique booths and sharing vegetables from his garden. Lover of the outdoors, he was a traveler and explorer. Ernie’s ideal weekend was spent at a Bluegrass Festival where he could enjoy his favorite music, be outside, and make new friends. He will be most remembered as an animated storyteller with a full body laugh.
