Born in Bakersfield, California, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Mellye Faust Barr.
Evelyn lived most of her life in Blountville, Tennessee. She received her B.A. from Berea College, Berea, KY, and a Master of Arts in Library Science from East Tennessee State University. In her career, she served as librarian in several public schools in Sullivan County, TN, and, finally, as Supervisor of Libraries for the Sullivan County School System.
Evelyn was very active in the Blountville Presbyterian Church and participated in the choir and in the women's groups, both locally and in the presbytery for many years. She spent many an hour rolling bandages and making receiving blankets to send to missionaries overseas.
After retirement, Evelyn and her late husband Earl moved to Greenville to be nearer family members. They became active members of St. Giles Presbyterian Church, where they volunteered in various capacities until declining health prevented this.
Playing the organ was a special delight to her, beginning from her days of playing the organ at Berea College. She also played the piano and the violin. Evelyn enjoyed working on word puzzles, games, and reading. She possessed a lively sense of humor. She knew how to be creative in the kitchen, as well, especially when Earl brought home a deer for the freezer. No one could top her pecan pie. Evelyn was an accomplished seamstress and kept her daughters in handmade clothes throughout their years in school. An avid Lady Vols fan, she loved watching Pat Summit's women's basketball teams compete. She and Earl loved to travel across the United States and were proud to have visited every state, with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska.
Evelyn was beloved by her family and friends, who take solace in the fact that she is now peaceful and rejoicing in the presence of her blessed Savior.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Earl Clarence Goad in 2009.
She is survived by her loving children: daughters, Betty Goad Templeton of Greer, and Carolyn Goad Osborne and husband, Rev. Dr. Dan Osborne of New Rochelle, NY; her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Nancy Goad of Greenville; her sister, Frances Barr Morgan; her brothers, Clarence W. Barr, Harold W. Barr and Graham W. Barr; granddaughter, Leslie Marie Goad; grandsons, David Timothy Osborne and wife, Jenny, and Jonathan Paul Osborne; one great-grandson, Owen; two great-granddaughters, Dabney and Bergen; nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Charlie Templeton.
Mrs. Goad is at The Mackey Mortuary, where the family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 6:15 pm, with the funeral service to follow at 6:30 pm, with the Reverend Matt P. Matthews, Jr., Rev. Dr. Dan Osborne, and Rev. David Osborne officiating.
Burial will be at 1:00 pm EST Thursday, January 22 at Gunnings Cemetery in Blountville, TN.
The family would like to thank the staff of Oakleaf Assisted Living and Memory Care and Danette, Tonya, and Peggy with Hospice Care of SC for the loving care given to Evelyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 1021 Hudson Road, Greenville, SC 29615 or to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1 Caledon Ct., Suite 1-A, Greenville, SC 29615.
