

She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Ernell and Lillian Lawson. Jane graduated from Winthrop University in 1962 with a degree in Physical Education. Shortly after graduation, she married George “Pat” Murphy, and together they began their married life in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
After returning to the United States, Jane developed a love for tennis that would remain an important part of her life for many years. She was a longtime member of Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, where she treasured both the sport and the many friendships she formed along the way. Jane played on several teams throughout the Upstate and continued competing well into her sixties. In 2006, her doubles team from Spindle Tree Racquet Club won the USTA sponsored Southern sectional in the Super Senior division.
Later in life, Jane discovered a talent for watercolor painting. She spent 20 years living on Lake Keowee, a place she often described as her “happy place,” where she enjoyed the beauty and peace of the lake.
Jane is a faithful member of Utica Baptist Church in Seneca. She loved studying the Bible and was active in many Bible study groups throughout her life. Jane had a servant’s heart and found great joy in helping others, always willing to lend a hand and support those around her.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Pat, a sister, Ann Frey of Spartanburg, sister and brother in law, Ian and Lyn Savidge of Brampton, Ontario Canada; children, Gwen McCarter (Steve) of Seneca, Cathy Gowan (David) of Greer, Mike Murphy (Robin) of Greenville as well as her beloved grandchildren, Thomas McCarter (Elizabeth), Graham Gowan (LeAnna), Lawson McCarter, Ella Murphy, 3 great-grandchildren and 4 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Mackey Funerals & Cremations 1 Pine Knoll, Greenville, SC 29609 on Friday March 20th at 1:00 pm with a service to follow at 2:00 pm. A private interment will be held at Graceland East Memorial Park and Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Utica Baptist Church, College Mission Fund 4056 Wells Hwy, Seneca SC 29678.
