Joyce was born in Wagener, South Carolina, on November 11, 1932, and grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. The second of six sisters, she helped the family by cooking and caring for younger siblings or working in the family business. She managed these responsibilities with a listening ear, a ready smile, joy and love, and an energy that seemed endless. In her adult life, Joyce continued to share her love. Whether you were her husband, a daughter, a grandchild, or a resident at a nursing home, she would freely share her time, her excellent cooking, and her skill at crafts, all while making you know that you were heard, you were loved, and you belonged. In her later years Joyce shared her love with the community, volunteering in food pantries and elder care ministries to make sure those in need had enough to eat and felt cared for. When Alzheimer’s robbed Joyce of most of her abilities, she continued to care for others as best she could, notably sharing her love through singing. Joyce was our sunshine, and she will be missed.
Joyce is survived by her daughters, Janice Daniel and Diane Trimble and her husband Steve; grandchildren, Adam Neal and his wife Candace, Julia Neal, David Neal, Ben Neal, and Chris Trimble; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Owen Neal; sisters, Ethel Ann Furtick, Lois Morrow, Dennis Armstrong, and Adele Bonnette; former son-in-law, Lloyd Neal; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, W. David Daniel; her parents, Owen C. and Myrtis Grandy Gunter; and her older sister, Cora Gunter Bodie.
A memorial service for Joyce and David will be held on Saturday, August 31, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Mackey Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.
In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor their memory, please volunteer with or donate to any organization that feeds or shelters those in need.
