

God’s faithful servant Larry Delaine Freeman of Greenville, South Carolina, passed peacefully March 14, 2025. Born on January 7, 1941, in Albermarle, NC, he was the son of Robert Reuben and Esther Burris Freeman. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years Sandra Simpson-Williams Freeman and sisters Wanda Bowers and Cathy Eudy and brother Van Gordon of Albermarle, NC; uncle Gerald Freeman of Harrisburg, NC; son Mark Freeman (Pam) of Greer, SC, and grandsons John Freeman of Birmingham, AL, and Bennett Freeman (Erin) of Greenville, SC; daughter Ashlyn Freeman and granddaughter Keaton Freeman of Laurens, SC; daughter Rebekah Read (Ryan) and twin grandsons Jacob and Jackson Read of Clearwater, FL; stepdaughter Cresent Williams Railey (Brent) and granddaughter Sara Kathryn Railey and grandson William Railey of Greer, SC; stepdaughter Melé Williams of Alexandria, VA; and stepson James Williams (Dianne) of Greenville, SC.
Larry was predeceased by his parents; brother Don Gordon; and sister Brenda Freeman Hoggy, all of North Carolina.
Larry graduated from A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, NC, and has remained close with his friends. Larry graduated from NC State, where he set records in track; pledged Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Afterwards Larry embarked upon a long and respected career in professional engineering with the same company, which went through many name changes, J.E. Sirrine-Jacobs Engineering-Bechtel Jacobs, the fact of which he was very proud.
Larry was a longtime member at First Presbyterian Church, where he served as usher. Previously, he served as a deacon at Taylors First Baptist Church. He loved reading his Bible, working Sudoku puzzles, and celebrating the achievements of his grandchildren.
The gentle man, with a twinkle in his eyes, was a man of few words. He was accomplished in snow skiing (68 different resorts with Yellowstone Club as his favorite), tennis (many regional and state championships), bicycling (including a cross-state trip), dancing (proud member of Carolina Shag Club), and bridge. He continued to lead a very active and inspiring lifestyle throughout retirement, which included numerous travel adventures all over the world. His favorite was his visit to the Holy Land, where he was able to walk in the footsteps of his Savior.
Larry was a dedicated and beloved husband, father, grandfather, nephew, friend and neighbor. He leaves a legacy of faithfulness and selfless service, and set an example of a life well-lived. He will be missed by all who knew him and especially by those who love him.
On Monday, March 24, 2025, the family will receive friends at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Washington Street, Greenville, SC 29601. A funeral service will held in the church sanctuary at 12 pm, with the Reverend Dr. Richard Gibbons officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
