Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Jesse Well Cannon and Alline Olson Cannon. Following graduation from Parker High School, he enrolled in Clemson College. He went on to serve his country for eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He continued public service as a Greenville City Police Officer from 1960 to 1969. He met the love of his life, Patricia Thornton, “Patsy”, while on police patrol downtown. He retired from Furman University in 2006. He was a member of Berea First Baptist where he served as a deacon, usher, and greeter.
Doug is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Patsy; three children, Rhonda Cannon Richards, Cheryl Miller Boling, and Jay Douglas Cannon; six grandchildren, Austin Miller, Christian Satterfield, Devan Miller, Cody Miller, Cory Miller, and Wells Cannon; two great-grandchildren, Roland Suggs, and James Suggs; brother, Wayne Cannon.
Doug and Patsy were always together. You could see them daily sitting on their front porch or as fixtures eating breakfast at Stax Original. Regaling stories as a police officer to all his friends was a favorite past time. To Doug, this was a lot of sharing of stories because everyone he met was considered a friend. In midlife, he and Patsy were bitten by the acting bug. Together they performed in numerous Upstate theatre productions. Doug appeared in two major motion pictures filmed in South Carolina.
A loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather, his greatest service was that of caring for his wife. As memories began fading for each of them, they continued holding hands and supporting each other daily.
Services for Doug will be held on Tuesday January 16, 2024, at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
