He proudly served with the 30th Finance Battalion at Fort McPherson, where he was entrusted with responsibilities that required integrity, discipline, and leadership. Over the course of his Army career, he progressed through some of the most demanding roles in military law enforcement and criminal investigation. His life and career reflected sincerity, professionalism, and steadfast service to his country.
Following his military career Melvin answered a higher calling, becoming a full-time pastor and counselor at the Word of God Counseling Center. He devoted himself to helping others heal, grow, and find purpose, bringing the same compassion, discipline, and integrity to ministry that he once brought to military service.
At the heart of Melvin’s life was his family. He was a devoted husband to wife, Denise Wagstaff; proud father of daughter, Lora Eaton (John); loving grandfather to Jesse Ratledge, Kaylee Eaton, and Kyson Eaton; as well as great-grandfather to Colton Ratledge, Eli Ratledge, Wrenlee Eaton, and Whitlee Eaton.
When he found moments of rest, Melvin cherished the simple joys of life. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time aboard his small yacht on Lake Keowee, enjoying the peace of the water, reflection, and the quiet freedom it offered. He valued calm, connection, and presence.
Melvin was a loyal and steadfast friend, and those who knew him well considered him dependable, thoughtful, and deeply principled. He lived a life defined by service, faith, and love. He protected others, sought truth, guided those in need, and devoted himself fully to his family and community. His legacy is not only found in medals or titles, but in the lives he touched, the justice he upheld, and the faith he lived every day.
Services for Melvin will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with a service to follow in the chapel. Committal will be held at 2:00 PM at M. J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Dr, Anderson, SC 2962.
