

Funeral services for Mildred Elizabeth Byrd will be Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home with burial to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00-11:00am. Mildred passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus at NHC Healthcare, Greer on April 2, 2013. Supported by a loving staff and special caregiver, Jackie Boatwright, she maintained a strong faith in God as she fought multiple health issues. She was born in Greenville, SC. on May 30, 1924 to Charles "Walt" Smith and Mattie Calloway Smith. She grew up in the Monaghan Community in a family with two brothers and five sisters, all of whom predeceased her. Charles and Rev. Leonard Smith, Lois Batson (Smith), Clara Foster (Smith), Ruby Langley (Smith), Pearline McWhorter (Smith) and Mattie Lee Amos (Smith). Married to Julius Alvin Byrd in 1949, she had a long and happy marriage of 56 years with most of those years spent at their home in Taylors, SC. She enjoyed homemaking and family. She was famous for her cakes and canned fruits and vegetables from their little hobby farm at Terry Creek in Travelers Rest, SC. Predeceasing her were her husband, Alvin Byrd, Sr., son Alvin Byrd, Jr. and beloved granddaughter, Tonya Byrd Rogers. Surviving are daughters, Betsy Pearson, Greenville and Robbye Sitz (Doug), River Falls, WI; seven grandchildren: Debbie Delander (Pat) Roberts, WI; Brian Hanson (Romaine), River Falls, WI; Jon Hanson (Kelly), Hammond, WI; Douglas Hanson, Hammond, WI; Chris Cogdell, Campobello, SC, Tee Smith Regina, Greenville, SC; Kim McDaniel (Jeff), Inman, SC, in addition are 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
