R. Leonard Price entered into Paradise on February 27, 2022, after being cared for by his loving family. He was born on February 25, 1944, in Joanna, SC, to Eddie Lee Price and Marie Prater Price (Roebuck).
Leonard was a talented athlete and lifelong sports enthusiast. At Clinton High School (‘62), he lettered in basketball, baseball, football, and track; held the school record for most points scored in a basketball game for over ten years; and won the State Championship with his baseball team in 1961. While attending Erskine College (‘66), he played both basketball and baseball, was a member of the 1965 NAIA District Championship baseball team, and was chosen captain of the team the following season. He was an avid golfer and spent many post-retirement days playing with the “Good Old Guys” golf group.
Leonard moved to Greenville, SC in 1969, began a long career in sales, and married his college sweetheart, Linda Young, the following year. After more than 30 years with Greenville Textile Supplies and Symtech, he retired from textile machinery sales and spent several more years in a consulting capacity at Cline Hose and Hydraulics before fully retiring.
Over the course of their nearly 52-year marriage, Leonard and Linda had three children, enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends, and often visited their Bonclarken cabin in Flat Rock, NC. Leonard’s greatest joy was being “Pots” to his two beloved grandchildren, Canon and Story.
He was an active member of the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon, superintendent of the Sunday school, president of the Beckham Bible Class, and spirited coach of his daughter’s church basketball team for many years. He later became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
As a loyal volunteer at his alma mater, Leonard was named Erskine Alumni Volunteer of the Year; was national co-chair of Living Endowment, an award-winning fundraising campaign; and was co-president of the Parent Advisory Council.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter Kelley Price Smith, her husband Senter, and grandchildren Canon and Story; daughter Julia Price (all of Greenville, SC); son Andrew Price (of Phnom Penh, Cambodia); sister Janice Price Martin (Johnny); brother Alan Roebuck (Nancy); and nephew Chuck Strickland. He is also survived by four half-brothers whom he met later in life–Eddie Price of Simpsonville, SC and John, Larry, and Rick Price of El Paso, TX.
The family expresses deep gratitude to the nurses, therapists, and CNAs at Brushy Creek Post Acute and those at Greer Memorial for the loving service and care they provided Leonard in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family the family respectfully requests memorials be made to Bonclarken Conference Center [www.bonclarken.org | 500 Pine Dr Flat Rock NC 28731].
A memorial service will be held at a later date; the family will share details when arrangements have been made.
