Rhoda was a native of Birmingham, Alabama and daughter of the late Frank and Josephine Woods. She was preceded in death by her three brothers whom she cherished: Frank M. Woods of California, Wilbur Woods (Bill) of New York, and Joseph Woods (Jo) of Chicago.
Rhoda was a graduate of Ashley Hall school in Charleston. After College of Charleston, she went to work as an accounting clerk for Jack Tar Hotel group. This position brought her to Greenville to work for the Poinsett Hotel. While working at the Poinsett Hotel, she was introduced to the father of her children, Charles S. Reyner, Sr. They were married at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. After getting married, she went on to work for Rey's Jewelers in an accounting role. After her time working at Rey's, she went to work for her brother representing Clos Du Bois Winery of California traveling the East Coast promoting sales in fine dining restaurants. After Clos Du Bois was sold, Rhoda was not ready to retire. She had a strong passion and love for Greenville, so she decided to go into real estate. She went to work for C. Dan Joyner and shared her pride of Greenville with people looking to move to the area.
Rhoda was always up for adventure and loved spending her time watching her grandchildren compete in school sports. On most afternoons during the school year, you could often find her on the Christ Church Episcopal School campus attending a sporting event. She was a Master Gardener and spent countless hours working in her yard. If she was not working in the yard, she was endlessly walking miles around her neighborhood. In addition to her gardening, she loved playing Bridge. In her past, she valued her summers spent at Beech Mountain, North Carolina and remembered fondly her time playing tennis.
Rhoda was an avid volunteer. She spent many years serving as the Treasurer for the Greenville Kiwanis Club. Through the Kiwanis Club, she organized and supported the Learn to Swim Program with the Greenville Red Cross. Under her direction, the program helped hundreds of children learn to swim and conquer their fear of drowning. Rhoda was also the Treasurer for many years for her investment club, CYGNET. She was an active legacy member of her sorority Delta, Delta, Delta. She was a lifelong learner at Furman University and loved attending as many Olli classes as they offered. She also served on the Music on Sunday Committee for the Temple of Israel. Her love of music spilled over to her volunteer role with the Greenville Symphony and their Tour of Homes. She enjoyed theater and held season tickets to several theaters in town for decades.
Rhoda loved to entertain and throw dinner parties, often cooking the entire meal for as many as twenty people with no assistance or extra help. Her joy for life, cherishing every moment spent with loved ones will be forever remembered. Many have shared their fondest memory was Rhoda’s grace, class, and elegance when meeting new people and making them feel welcome and appreciated from the beginning.
Surviving are her three children: a daughter Elizabeth Reyner Gross of Greenville, a daughter Deborah Reyner Roberts (Tom) of Greenville, and a son Charles Stephen Reyner, Jr. (Mary Catherine) of Greenville. Her six grandchildren: Will M. Gross (Caroline), Lydia G. Winkles (Skylar), Taylor P. Roberts, Mary Wilson W. Reyner, Jack S. Roberts, and Charles S. Reyner, III also cherish her memory.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Susan B. Komen Foundation, or locally to Greenville Kiwanis Club/Foundation.
