Ruth Hamby Dickerson passed away September 22, 2018 peacefully in her sleep at home in Greenville, SC at the age of 89. Born in Pelzer, SC, she was the daughter of William Troy Hamby and Lillian Greer Hamby. At the age of 17, Ruth married the love of her life, Douglas Randolph (Randy) Dickerson shortly after his return from service in World War II, and together they lived the life of the Greatest Generation with love and devotion for 71 years until his passing in July 2017. It was her greatest wish to join him for eternity.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Dickerson Cunningham of Greenville; brother Bill Hamby of Mauldin, grandchildren Katherine Dickerson McCain (Donnie) and Douglas Stephen Dickerson, Jr. (Amber) of Florence, SC; sister-in-law Rose Dickerson Davis; special nieces Rita Dickerson and Kelly Dickerson Strum; and many other loving nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Douglas Stephen Dickerson, and brother Reverend Norman Luther Hamby.
Although Ruth had a career outside the home as a secretary for many years, her chosen role was homemaker. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother who delighted in cooking her family’s favorite meals, telling stories and having her home filled with laughter.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 1:00 to 1:45pm at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC 29607, followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm and burial at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
