Sara was born in Bloomsburg, PA on August 22, 1925 as the only child of Paul and Jennie Freedly. She graduated from high school in Benton, PA and attended Pennsylvania State University on a 4-year scholarship that she won in a statewide essay contest with a piece entitled “How Strong Local Government Safeguards Our American Democracy.” Sara completed a Bachelor’s degree in English at Penn State and stayed on to earn a Master’s degree in Education as well. After completing her Masters, Sara taught high school English and Social Studies for four years before moving to Hartford, CT to work at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company.
In 1953, Sara met and married Glenn McKernon Hall, a naval veteran and graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Glenn and Sara had two children, Craig and Lisa, and later moved to New Jersey, where Glenn built a career with Motorola, and Sara taught high school and worked at a local public library. The couple retired and moved to Greenville’s Rolling Green Village in the early 1990s.
Sara was a devout Christian and a lover of literature, poetry and music. As a retiree, she was active at Greenville’s First Presbyterian Church and kept her mind sharp by reading, playing word games and bridge, taking classes and writing for the Rolling Green Village newspaper. She also enjoyed playing the piano, and she loved to sing.
Sara was predeceased by her husband Glenn, who passed away in 2013. She is survived by her children, Craig and Lisa Hall, by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Joanne Hall, and by six nieces and two nephews.
A Committal service will be held for Sara at Graceland East Memorial Park on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, the National Diabetes Foundation and Greenville Literacy Association, all causes that Sara supported.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mackeycenturydrive.com for the Hall family.
