William Henry "Bill" Wagner, 99, husband of the late Anojean Gassaway Wagner, died September 22, 2015 at Rolling Green Retirement Village.
Born in Alpena, MI, he was the son of the late William Henry and Mildred Kessler Wagner.
The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by a brother Thomas and a sister Elinore.
Bill was a member of the Greatest Generation, serving in General George Patton's Army during the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. 2nd Lt. Wagner landed on Normandy's Utah beach one month after D-Day with orders to disrupt and destroy German submarine bases.
Following success he was promoted to 1st Lt., and was assigned to Trier, France, the southern end of the Battle of the Bulge line. Following Japan's surrender, Bill was discharged in April 1946 as Major.
He graduated from the University of Maryland and retired after 33 years of service with the government at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
He was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11:00am at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson.
Mr. Wagner will lie in state at The Mackey Mortuary, Friday, September 25, 2015 from 2:00- 4:00pm.
