Dolores Crompton Braxton (nee Dolores Irene Crompton) was born December 11, 1928 in Irvington, New Jersey. After graduating from Linden Hall in Pennsylvania, Dolores attended Parsons School of Design in New York City and received a certificate in fashion design in 1950. At one point, she worked for Charles James at his atelier in Manhattan. She soon met and married James Braxton (Jim). She left design to raise their four children – Jocelyn, Meredith, Ian, and James – and they settled in Greenwich, CT in 1965. Dolores was a talented artist and, in addition to sewing the latest fashions for her daughters, she pursued drawing, painting and photography. Her curiosity was insatiable.
Once her children were in high school, Dolores worked for MCI Corporation in their customer service department, until she and Jim retired. Until Jim died, they spent half the year in Nova Scotia and half in Connecticut or Florida. They also traveled to Europe, including France, where Jim was born. In retirement, Dolores continued her interest in fashion and art, visiting museums regularly, painting, and life drawing at Silvermine School of Art. She has been a faithful member of Christ Church since 2001 and spent many years volunteering for Neighbor to Neighbor.
Dolores was predeceased by her husband Jim and her son Ian. She is survived by three children, Jocelyn Braxton Armstrong (Addison), Meredith Braxton (Stephen Barto), and James Braxton, as well as seven grandchildren, Sean Braxton (Amber), Heather Braxton (Charles Hoover), Angus Armstrong, Reece Armstrong, Trevor Braxton-Barto (Hillary Abbot), Acadia Braxton-Barto, and Evan Braxton-Barto.
A memorial service to celebrate Dolores’s life will be held at Christ Church in Greenwich, 254 East Putnam Avenue, at 11 a.m. on July 24, 2023, with internment immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Silvermine School of Art. (http://www.silvermineart.org/support/)
