After her family moved to Greenwich, Helen attended Glenville School and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1936. She worked at Woolworth with her sister, Margaret, and as a secretary at Fawcett Publications.
Helen became a member of the Greenwich YWCA at 12 years old. She took tap dancing lessons at the Y as a teenager and attended charm school classes there as a young woman. In the early 40’s, she volunteered at the YWCA as a USO Hostess during the war.
She married Theodore Murphy and together they settled in Greenwich and raised four children. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, golfing, travelling and taking a ride to the beach. Helen loved living in her home in Riverside where for 50 years she welcomed family and friends. Later in her life, she took classes at The University of Connecticut in Stamford and resumed her membership at the YWCA. She joined the Y’s Seniorize aerobics class where she celebrated her 90th birthday with her classmates.
Helen will be greatly missed by her family. She was a loving grandmother to her nine grandchildren, Jason Murphy, Ryan Murphy, James Murphy, Sarah Murphy, Julianne Agonis, Catherine Agonis, Robert Martin, Glenn Martin and Mitchell Murphy.
She is survived by her four children, Thomas Murphy and his wife, Linda, of Naples, Fla, Susan Martin and her husband, Robert, of Stamford, CT, James Murphy and his wife, Jill, of Riverside, CT, and Michael Murphy of Westport, CT. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews and her sister, Grace Girala, of Houston, Texas
A special memorial celebration of Helen’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Leo P. Gallagher & Sons Funeral Home, Greenwich. To send expressions of love and memories, please visit www.leopgallaghergreenwich.com
