

Mary was the beloved wife of Lloyd Gravengaard, and longtime resident of Riverside. She was born in Wausau, WI on December 16, 1943 and graduated from Luther College with a degree in elementary education in 1965.
She worked as an early elementary school teacher for a decade in the western Chicago suburbs Elmhurst and Lombard.
Mary cared deeply for her church and her community. After moving to Riverside in 1983, she became an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Old Greenwich for over 20 years serving in many leadership roles including as a deacon. She was the volunteer coordinator for St. Luke’s Community Services in Stamford. She was a board member of Hill House senior residence in Riverside as well as Greenwich Chaplaincy Services. And she led her church’s volunteer efforts at Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich.
She was active in Community Bible Study as both a member and as a core group leader. She is an active member of Stanwich Congregational Church, where she was often seen greeting both old and new members after services during coffee hour.
Mary is survived by her husband Lloyd Gravengaard; by her son Eric Gravengaard, his wife, Liza, and their children Paige, Thomas and Walther; by her daughter Kirsten Gravengaard-Morgan and her husband, Ashley, and their children, Lucas and Zachary. Her fondest memories are of spending quality grandma time with her five grandchildren.
In addition, Mary is survived by her brothers Jay Sandstrom, and his wife, Lynnae; and Timothy Sandstrom.
