William Michael “Mike” Funck, beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather, passed away on Thursday, April 6th with Ellen, his wife of 55 years, by his side. Mike had a wonderful life filled with family, friendships, professional success and outstanding service for the needs of others.
Mike was born on March 12, 1943 in Evanston, Illinois, son of William and Marie Funck. He had an older brother,Richard, who he revered!
Mike attended Georgetown University where he was Captain of the HOYA Nine baseball team. He also joined Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)with a commitment to serve his country when he finished his education.
After graduation in 1965, Mike volunteered with Operation Crossroads in Africa. This was one of the first of many volunteer acts that characterized Mike’s life.
When Mike returned in the Fall, he started studies at Fordham Law School in New York City. At the start of year 2, he met Ellen McNamara and the rest is history. Mike proposed in 6 months and they were married within the year. After graduation with his JD degree, Mike and Ellen spent a year at Ft. Eustis, Va. where Mike played baseball on the Army team. HIs second year was in Vietnam in the US Army Procurement Agency in Saigon. He received the Bronze Star and was promoted to Captain while there. Mike loved reunions with his USAPAV buddies and their wives.
When Mike returned to the States, he and Ellen moved to Pelham, NY and Mike worked in the Trust Department of Chemical Bank and others before joining U.S. Trust. Chester Park in Pelham was an incredible neighborhood. What a great place to raise a family! In 1993, Mike opened U.S. Trust of Connecticut and was its President and CEO. The Funcks moved to Riverside.
Mike was also dedicated to his three daughters, Julie, Keara and Amy. He was always there for them; coaching and cheering them on. You can imagine his delight when the 3 daughters and their husbands produced 9 grandchildren: 7 BOYS and 2 GIRLS. Their yard became a ballfield.
Mike continued his charitable work throughout his life. He is President Emeritas of Fairfield County Community Foundation (FCCF). He was on the boards of the World Affairs Forum, Bruce Museum, Stamford Center for the Arts, NFTE, and a strong supporter of Pacific House, a shelter for the homeless in Stamford.
Mike loved people and really helped to support those who needed help. He always had a smile. Even in the last few months when he spent so much time in hospitals, rehab hospitals and skilled rehabs, he always smiled, never complained. Every staff loved him. Mike loved sports too: tennis (early competition at the Larchmont Shore Club) and golf at the Stanwich Club and Mariner Sands in Florida.
In addition to his wife Ellen, he leaves daughters Julia McGovern (Jim McGovern), Keara Funck (Don Federle) and Amy Davidson (Maxwell Davidson). He is also survived by his brother Richard (Ann) and his sister-in-law Julia McNamara (Richard Lolatte).
Most important to Papa, he is survived by his TEAM: JACK, QUINN, JULIA, AMELIA , LIAM, LUKE, JEREMY, WILL AND HUGH!
