Elmo Eugene Mathews, 91, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024 in Fort Smith. He was born June 18, 1933 in Ratcliff, Arkansas to Loyd Francis and Rosa Bell (Kesner) Mathews. He was a 1951 graduate of Greenwood High School, a retired member of the 188th Air National Guard, veteran of the U.S. Air Force and member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Mathews; two sons, Eddie Mathews of Luther, OK and Jerry Mathews of Fort Smith; one daughter, Jill Harris of Ozark; two brothers, Charles Mathews of Morrilton and Farrel Mathews of Bella Vesta; two sisters, Genese Minor of Horn Lake, MS and Mary Ramsey of Fort Smith; seven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Mathews and a sister, Louella Kamerman.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, September 5 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood with burial at the Fort Smith National Cemetery. Viewing will be Wednesday from 1 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 5 – 7 p.m.
