Ok-Im (Sukhi) Slate Johnston (Do) was born in South Korea on January 26, 1948. At the age of 77 she passed away peacefully in her home in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on February 2, 2025 surrounded by abundant love. Ok-Im retired from Mercy Housekeeping, a job which she loved. When she lived in California, she was the owner and chef of Kay's Sidewalk Cafe. She was immensely creative and always willing to try something new. Her cooking was legendary, especially her egg rolls. She was also known as a talented seamstress, gardener, fan of K-dramas and family game nights, and was not afraid to tell it to you straight. Ok-Im loved God, was strong in faith, and took comfort in knowing she would be with God in heaven.
Ok-Im was preceded in death by her husband, Darriell Slate; parents, Hung-Tong Do and Chun-Im Chang; sisters, Chong-Im (Sandy) Connell and Ok-Nyon (Peggy) Grimm and two sons-in-law, Bruce Hubbard, Jr. and Chad Braun. Ok-Im is survived by her sister, Ok-Yeol Do; daughters, Joy Braun and Monica Slate; sisters in law, Sharion Trantham, Maryann Stringer, Nina Goodner, Carol Lynn and Lisa Buckner and many loving nieces and nephews. The loves of her life were her grandchildren, Maelani (Logan) Kelly, Kyleigh Phillips and Megan Brewer. That love overflowed to her great grandchildren, Omiliano Parga and Ayla Parvin. She took joy in being a bonus grandmother to Aaron Hubbard and wife, Katelyn, Grayson and Sarah Hubbard and Katy Braun; great grandchildren, Jenna and Kalie Rizo and Kaylie and Rhiannon Hubbard. Ok-Im had many wonderful friends throughout the years but her steadfast anchor was her best friend, Hwa-Sik Schroeder.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate the life of Ok-Im at 2 p.m. on Monday February 10 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, Arkansas. A family-led burial at Huntington Cemetery will be held at a later date.
