

A celebration of Carleton’s life will be held, 2pm, Sunday, July 28th at Bateman Carroll Funeral home, 520 W. Powell Blvd, Gresham. Carleton passed away surrounded by his family’s love and care on July 23rd. He was 73 years old.
Carleton’s life began in Fargo, North Dakota on August 6, 1945, the youngest of two children to Courtney Frederick and Caroline (Sjobeck) Schley. Raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he attended high school and then graduated from University of North Dakota. Not only did he receive his BA degree in teaching, he was also a very good pool player. On June 23, 1985 he married the love of his life Charlotte L. Horsman (Smith) in Rochester, Minnesota. A year and a half later they moved to Oregon.
Carleton and Charlotte have lived in the Gresham area for the last 11 years. He was a school bus driver for the David Douglas School District for over 19 years before retiring in June of 2014. It was during the last year at work they found him to have cancer.
Carleton was a playful person who enjoyed the simple things in life, family, friends, watching his favorite sports teams; the Portland Trail Blazers and Timbers; Seattle Mariners and Seahawks. He so enjoyed his travels with Charlotte on cruises to the Caribbean and Mexico and trips to Disneyland and Disney World.
Carleton is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, children; David Schley (Sara) and Laura Stephenson (Alex), Step children; David Horsman and Susan Horsman, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. His sister Annette Kano pre-deceased him.
