Herb was born in Normal Illinois to Clayton and Genevieve Snook. He was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1948. He liked to help his dad in the Snook Feed Mill when he was not in school. On August 8th, 1952, he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Illinois State University. While in college he was a Gamma Phi Circus member. He entered the US Army on August 11th, 1952 during the Korean War until he received his honorable discharge on May 11th, 1954.
On June 4th, 1955, he married Ethel Williams from Carlock Illinois at Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in Bloomington Illinois. In June 1959, he received his Masters of Science in Education from Illinois State University. Herb and Ethel moved to Portland Oregon in the summer of 1959.
He started teaching for the Portland School District in October 1959 teaching 7th grade for 2 years and then another 26 years teaching 5th grade. Mr. Snook was a favorite for the students with all of them wanting him for their teacher. He had 24 years’ perfect attendance as a teacher. He worked with the Safety Patrol, taught First Aid Classes, mentored 12 student teachers, and taught Summer School. He loved leather work, arts, and crafts; and taught this to his students and family.
After training with a team, Herb climbed to the original top of Mount St. Helens prior to its eruption.
Herb and Ethel began attending Lynch Baptist Church (now Living Hope Baptist Church) in 1959. This is where Herbert was baptized, served as Head Deacon, sang in the choir, helped with VBS, taught Sunday School, helped serve in the Bread Ministry, and Building Ministry.
After retiring from teaching January 28th, 1988, he got his real estate license in April of the same year. This was his career until his early 80’s when he and Ethel moved to Cornell Estates Retirement and Assisted Living in Hillsboro June 2013.
Herbert went Home to be with the Lord at age 87 on April 6th, 2017. He is survived by his wife Ethel; daughters Mary (Snook) Ferrell of Hillsboro and Rebecca (Snook) Alvin of Lebanon Oregon; three granddaughters Christine (Ferrell) Green, Jennifer (Ferrell) Gietzen, and Dianna Ferrell; son-in-law's Steve Ferrell and John Alvin; and grandson-in-laws Ryan Green and Joshua Gietzen. He has one living sibling, Ruthmariam (Snook) Parsons of Illinois.
He will be remembered for his friendly personality, loyalty to his family and friends, strong faith in Jesus Christ; and generosity of his time, abilities and money. While he is being welcomed by Jesus and reuniting with loved ones in Heaven; he will be deeply missed on this Earth.
