Jim was a man who knew a little bit about a lot of things. His humor and wit created much laughter. Jim was born in Portland, Oregon on August 14, 1950 to Frank and Evelyn (Keller) Bates; and was raised with one brother and three step-siblings. He attended both Benson and Reynolds High School. After graduating he attended Portland State University and continued his education in chemical engineering. In 1971, while in college at PSU, Jim and Diana were married. He then served in the US Navy in the submarine division. After 6 years in the service, Jim chose a career as an electrician and dedicated 40 years of his life to the Local 48 IBEW Electrical Union as a journeyman. He also served as an instructor for the union for 20 years during his tenure. Fishing, carpentry, and gardening were just a few of Jim’s interests. He enjoyed family time, which included card and board games and beach trips. Jim was an explorer at heart; he would always make a point to take the scenic route whenever the family would travel around town or to the beach. James Edward Bates, of Gresham, passed away January 4, 2015 at his home. He is survived by his father, Frank; his wife of over 40 years Diana; children, Kirstin(Greg), Sam(Katie), Alyssa(Kevin), and 8 grandchildren. His laughter, wit and sarcasm will be missed.
