June was born on June 3, 1922, in Boise, Idaho, to Benjamin William Shober and Hilda Turley Shober. June's parents divorced when she was quite young, and her mother later remarried - giving her a little brother, Stanley, when she was seven years old.
June grew up all over the western states, bouncing around from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado to Oregon where she later met, married, and settled down with her husband, Edward Nilsson Kendell whom she had met in Corvallis, Oregon, and where they were married on October 6, 1946.
June gave birth to five children: four boys and a girl. She is survived by all five of her children: Michael Edward, Steven George (married to Brenda Muse), David Neal (married to Christine Lucky), Chris William (Sandra Tinker), and Joanne Kay Kendell. Also surviving her are her half-son-in-law, Vern Martin, and her grandchildren: Ford, Afton, Holly, Benjamin, Eli, Tamara, Joshua, Mathew, Julie, and Rick, as well as her great-grandchildren: Derrick, Kaleigh, Elias, Alabama, Zian, and Eva. She is also survived by her brother, Stan Branson (married to Dee), her Nephew, Richard, and her niece, Terri, and her grand-niece, Bailee, and grand-nephew, Andrew, and far too many other relatives and loved ones to enumerate.
June has been a resident of the Gresham area since 1960 when the family moved to a farm in Boring. Shortly after the move, she began making custom clothes for Barbie and Ken for sale in stores in Gresham. To say she was a dressmaker would be a gross understatement as she was an extraordinarily gifted seamstress who shared her talent and passion with nearly everyone she met. She opened and, for several years, ran a successful fabric and sewing machine store, the “Knit Fabric Sewing Center” in Gresham where she taught many of the Gresham residents how to sew knit fabrics during the '70 's. In the late '70's and early '80's she taught hundreds of people across America the same techniques she had perfected in Gresham. From the mid to late '80's on she taught people around the USA, Canada, and parts of Europe how to create art with their sewing machines using techniques she helped develop in sewing machine embroidery. She was an award-winning miniature quilt maker and earned a Master Degree in Design, on scholarship, when in her seventies.
June has been very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) since her conversion in August of 1950. She has held positions as Stake Relief Society President, Portland Stake; Relief Society President, Gresham Ward; Sunday School Librarian, Sunday School Teacher, and many other rewarding positions of service.
The funeral service will be at the Walters Hill Ward Chapel, which is located at 12300 SE 312th Avenue, Boring, Oregon 97009, on Saturday April 14, at 1:00 P.M. Viewing is available one hour before the service and on Friday Night between 6:00 and 8:00 P.M. at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon, located at 520 West Powell Boulevard. Gresham, Oregon 97030.
